A poem for portraits and landscapes

Crisp silence
Brilliant light
Confident little folk come to say hello
An introduction of words which I have never heard before but understand
Come to me and tickle my nose
Familiar smell
Warm hug

CONCEPT THOUGHTS

As I allow myself to travel around my imagination, I met some strange creatures along the way. They kept me company as I roam. Each of them have such strong personalities. They sit for me so I can complete some portraits of them. We exchange information about each other, or favourite time of day, what we would most like to see if the rules of logic did not apply, our favourite stories and such.
I also like to do landscape paintings as a way to document my time here. As I search, every day getting closer to the centre of my mind, I am happy because I have been able to find a place that I can go when times get tough. I know that I can always rely on this brilliantly colourful world to heal wounds or to keep me company when I am feeling lonely. It is a place where I can go for a second while I am waiting in a line or where I can stay for hours.

This body of work was a way to document my imagination. A way to describe to the outside world what goes on inside my brain. Through an abundance of external inspiration, such as animated television shows, outsider artists, overheard conversations and comic books, I developed a world which I became extremely familiar with and fond of. I would constantly catch myself drifting away to this same place most days, being comforted by the brilliant light and colour which revealed itself to me. Though not at all a new idea, I always found imaginary far away places to be a highly successful way of entertainment. I always gravitated towards books, films, or even music which explored a whole new world that had different logic to ours. A logic that never really had to be explained because it was what was the norm.

YAY! so i have finally finished the first painting of my new collection for my solo exhibition! It is a thing i met on a journey to the center of my brain. It was very pleasant and didn't mind sitting for me for the portrait.

New Project: CIRCLE FACES

Recently I have started a project which uses a couple of circle pieces of pulp wood, ranging in sizes which I have sourced in different places. The largest I found on the side of the road and it is about 1.5meters, the medium I found in a thrift shop for $4 and the smaller one I have had lying around my studio which I cut out of a wall mural last year.

The idea is that I will paint strange faces on the circles using the spirit mountain patterning technique which I used for two exhibitions I did last year. It was an effective technique which the audience seemed to really respond well to.

The faces are styled off a few pictures I drew for some friends of mine while i was on holiday in the country. They asked me for a picture of anything so I drew their future loves. I really likes using multiple pairs of eyes as a way to fill up the space of the drawing. It gives a slight puzzle like quality which is quite abstract.

I am onto my third layer of patterning and I plan to post the process images as I go. So, in a day or two, I will show you how I am going.

Much love.xx

Illustration: the ultimate form of creativity

I personally do not believe in a spiritual world so what I can see is reality for me. This is why I love illustration so very much. It is a way for me to go into my mind and search out wonderful, outrageous universes which are so far removed from this reality. The places which I conjure have different rules, strange foreign creatures and magical things which present themselves to me as I wonder through my dreams.

The characters which I create all have different personalities, some devious and cruel, some kind and helpful. The one thing they do have in common though is that they are all creatures which I remember forever.

If you are bored and restless, maybe try something I like to do which helps me immensely get back to my normal happy self. Try creating a strange being which you can make friends with. Give drawing the body a go and then write a couple of personality traits by its side. This way, at least you know you made a new friend today.
Here are some of my favourite creatures which a handful of illustrators have made for us all to enjoy.

BECI ORPIN book launch- Find & Keep

So I headed over to the book launch last night and had a great little old time! I was so happy to see the one and only Beci sitting with her books and giving a signature out to her fans. Though I do feel bad for her hand, I am so happy that she signed my copy. The book has great creative craft ideas to try your skills with great for young and old. The small captions of text are very informative on her personal creative process which I loved. If you want a bit of a kick up the bum these holidays for creative projects, I strongly recommend this colourful and wonderfully constructed book.

She is one of my all time creative idols and she has never once disappointed me in her directions. She is one who created a new design aesthetic for Melbourne and I will be forever grateful to her for helping me get through my studying with her motivation and inspiration.
