I recently found out that my snail shell illustration was chosen to be published in the next Inscribe journal which will be my first official published piece. I am very excited to get a hard copy once it is printed.

Studio Space Feng Shui

This is a podcast from the illustration island website which explores the idea of feng shui in a creative studio space. it was really great to listen to while i was doing my work and it helped me understand the key elements in a studio space.

Just a thought.

My mantra revolves around the idea that sometimes, more often than not, more is more. It all depends on how you utilize the busy visuals. To create my patterns, I use the simplest of shapes: line. Line is integral to each of my works, because it is this simple shape which demonstrates control and balance in a busy space.

With the simple juxtaposition of vertical and horizontal line groupings, can I express anything from natural textures like hair or thread to something more abstract, which makes the technique appropriate for a variety of design applications.

I look to many countries for inspiration, taking particular notice of their traditional fabrics. This is because I believe fabrics best reflect the culture of nations, revealing the social and political position through history to present day.

I believe that illustration as an industry can and should refer to folk art or 'outsider' art because they are both legitimate processes of expression, yet because of the involvement of naive imagery and concepts, it becomes slightly removed from the fine art industry. That is why I constantly look to folk art for ideas and ways of expressing myself. It is the poetic nature that draws me to it.

I love the medium of illustration because it can be enjoyed on vastly differing levels. It can contain a depth of concept and be rich with symbolism, or it can be content to simply present a striking image. Once again, because of it's separation from the fine art industry, the artist is granted a certain freedom in the way their work can be utilised.

I will always be grateful to illustration.

Hand job:a catalog of type

I definitely recommend this great graphics book by Michael Perry which contains plenty of inspiration for those who are creative souls. It includes many different artists and their interpretation of the alphabet.
